BC Cyclist’s Death Deepens Bike Safety Concerns

Kelsey Rennebohm, a BC graduate student, was killed Friday night when she was struck by an MBTA bus while riding her bicycle HERE. Residents of the area – one that is in extremely close proximity several major universities – identified the intersection as “dangerous”.

As a lifelong resident of Boston, I can attest that the neighborhood is in dire need of attention, especially when one considers that ridership among Boston residents increases exponentially year after year. As it stands, cyclists and pedestrians account for 19 percent of road fatalities (though they only take 12 percent of trips) and the state’s pedestrian and cyclist fatality rate is 14 percent higher than the national average. With biking swiftly becoming the transportation of choice for local college students, measures need to be taken to ensure the safety of cyclists and drivers alike.
