The official Fenway neighborhood is referred to as Fenway-Kenmore. There are numerous districts that make up this neighborhood including East Fenway, West Fenway, Audubon Circle, and Kenmore Square. Fenway is named after “The Fenway,” a main thoroughfare in the Boston area. As of the 2010 census, Fenway-Kenmore’s population was approximately 40,898 residents. The neighborhood is noted for its brownstone townhouse, brick walk-ups, and five-to six- story apartment buildings. There are also many small independently owned shops lining the streets. The area is also known for many of the city’s top cultural institutions including the Museum of Fine Arts and Symphony Hall. Students from Boston University, Northeastern University, Berklee College of Music, and Boston Conservatory of Music reside in the Fenway-Kenmore area. The majority of the buildings in the Kenmore area have been purchased by Boston University over the years and turned into dorms, specifically in the Audubon Circle area.
The Fenway-Kenmore neighborhood broke away from neighboring Brookline officially in the 1870’s. Fenway-Kenmore is easily accessible from most of Boston, with stops on the Orange Line and all branches of the Green Line. There are also several bus lines servicing the area and it surrounded by many major roadways including Park Drive.
