Somerville is a city slightly over 4 square miles located just two miles north of Boston in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. As of the 2010 census, the population was 75,700 people. Somerville was first settled in 1630 as a part of Charlestown, and was then established as a separate town in 1842. In 1872, Somerville was officially incoroproated as a city. In 2006, the area was named the "best run city in Massachusetts" by the Boston Globe. As of the 2010 census, 42.6% of Somerville residents were aged between 25 and 44, making this the largest age group in the area.
Somerville is known for its large number of squares and is often defined by them. These squares include David Square, Union Square, Ball Square, Teele Square, and Magoun Square. The recent expansion and addition of a T stop at Assembly Square has also added interest and growth to the area.
Somerville is home to many attractions and points of interest, including the newly built Legoland at Assembly Square and The Somerville Theater which is home to the infamous Museum of Bad Art. The area also houses many notable publications, including Candlewick Press, Wicked Local, and The Somerville News. Tufts University also falls partly in Somerville and is the largest employer in the area.
The area is easily accessbile by foot, rail, and car. In 2013, 16.6% of Somerville commuters either walked, biked or worked from home. In 2013, the Orange Line of the MBTA began stopping at Assembly Square. In addition, the MBTA approved the addition of the Union Square stop on the Green B Line, slated to complete construction in 2017. Somerville is currently serviced by the Red, Orange, and Green Lines of the MBTA, as well as numerous bus routes.
